Acupuncture in Coeur d'Alene
More Than Acupuncture:
A Comprehensive Approach to Better Health
Acupuncture is a powerful therapeutic tool and an important part of what we do at Vital Health. We use it within a comprehensive approach to care. By looking at the bigger picture, we can better understand what may be contributing to the problem and what may be getting in the way of recovery. Depending on what we find, your care may include acupuncture along with nutritional therapy, herbal medicine, whole-food supplementation, or other natural approaches.
How Does it Work?
Acupuncture points are located in areas with higher concentrations of superficial nerves, blood vessels, and neuromuscular attachments. Stimulating these points sends signals throughout the body through the nervous, circulatory, immune, and hormonal systems. These signals help the body regulate function and support its natural healing processes.
We liken acupuncture to the contractor on a construction site. Like the contractor, acupuncture directs the workers—the organs and systems in your body—and the use of the materials—the nutrients—to help the body heal itself and function at an optimal level.
Each acupuncture point has a different purpose. Depending on the point selected, the signal may encourage the body to increase or decrease activity, or focus attention on a particular area, to help restore and support healthy function.
How Acupuncture Supports the Body
Acupuncture works by:
- Releasing natural chemicals (i.e. endorphins) that help suppress pain, relax muscles and reduce stress
- Reducing inflammation and muscle spasms
- Activating and supporting healthy blood and energy circulation
- Stimulating and strengthening immune function
- Helping regulate body temperature and moisture distribution
- Supporting healthy digestion and gastrointestinal function
- Influencing blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels
- Supporting endocrine system function
- Influencing the central and peripheral nervous systems
- Helping open the lungs and support easier breathing
- Helping break up “stagnation” caused by trauma and other factors
- Supporting cardiovascular health
- Activating and promoting the healing process
Why Choose Vital Health for Acupuncture?
At Vital Health, acupuncture is not provided from a one-size-fits-all protocol. Your care is based on what we learn through a comprehensive evaluation and the factors contributing to your health concerns.
A Comprehensive Evaluation
We look beyond individual symptoms to identify underlying factors and anything that may be interfering with healing. Learn more about our New Patient Evaluation Process.
Personalized Acupuncture Care
Acupuncture points and treatment strategies are selected according to your individual needs rather than using the same approach for everyone.
More Than One Therapeutic Tool
When appropriate, acupuncture can be combined with nutritional therapy, herbal medicine, whole-food supplementation, and other natural approaches to provide more complete support.
Decades of Experience
Vital Health brings decades of experience in acupuncture and natural healthcare to every treatment plan.
Vital Health has been recognized as Best of North Idaho for Acupuncture every year since 2018—earning 1st Place each year except 2020, when we received 2nd Place.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Hypodermic needles—the kind used to administer medications or draw blood—have a beveled, cutting edge. They are designed to create an opening in the skin so fluid can be injected or withdrawn. Some of the discomfort associated with these needles comes from the cutting action, the fluid being injected, and the localized pressure or swelling that can follow.
An acupuncture needle is very different. It is tremendously thinner—in fact, multiple acupuncture needles can fit inside the shaft of an average hypodermic needle. The tip is rounded and very fine: sharp enough for effective insertion, but not designed to cut the tissue in the same way. Nothing is injected, and nothing is removed.
Because of these differences, acupuncture does not create the same sensation as receiving an injection or having blood drawn. The fine needle slips into the tissue with very little disruption, and there is no burning fluid or localized swelling from an injection.
Most people, if they feel anything at all, describe needle placement as a very quick pinch—sometimes compared to the sensation of a mosquito bite (without the itch). A guide tube is generally used for precise placement. As the tube is gently pressed against the skin, it helps stabilize and slightly stretch the surface, allowing the needle to enter quickly and with minimal sensation.
Many people come in feeling very apprehensive about needles, only to be surprised by how easy their first treatment is. Once they have experienced acupuncture for themselves, they often express amazement over how easy it was and say they wish they had come long ago.
