The Gift of Health

Good health is not an entitlement, it is not something we are born with and guaranteed for life, and is not something someone can just give us.   We live in a time that good health is something we have to work at acquiring, and we can’t take it for granted.  With all the stresses inherent in our busy lifestyles, we reach for things outside of ourselves to try to fill an emptiness, especially when we don’t feel well.  This only worsens our state of mind and health.

When fatigued, for example, we grab for coffee, sugar or energy drinks.  When we feel lifeless, we reach for something to give us a lift – exciting, dramatic T.V. or movies, music with much emotion, and for far too many people, a variety of illegal or immoral activities. We may do things to an extreme or become obsessive compulsive.  All in an effort to feel better or to feel in control of something in our lives.

When the holidays come, we add to our fatigue and stress with the “traditional” gift-buying frenzy.  What would happen if instead, we gave the Gift of Health?  How different would our lives be? I stated in the beginning that no one can give you health, but there are things that could be given to support our health.

Gift certificates to various health practitioners are generally a much appreciated gift. The gift of a massage, chiropractic or acupuncture treatments. The gift of a facial or a day at the spa. You could give the gift of a gift certificate to purchase some healthier foods, such as at a health food store.

Books on health are generally appreciated. My favorite educational gifts to help people gain control over their health and understanding what goes wrong with their health include: Going Back to the Basics by Mary Frost; Empty Harvest by Mark Anderson and Bernard Jenson; Real Food Real Fast by Rico Caveglia; Why do I Need Whole Food Supplements by Lorrie Medford; and The Real Truth About Vitamins and Anti-oxidants by Judith DeCava.

You could also stock the refrigerator or freezer of someone you care for with fresh veggies. You could give a gift certificate for the purchase of quality supplements from a natural health care provider, or even purchase the supplements yourself. You can invest in educational classes for them, or at very least encourage them to attend.

If money is short, give them a “certificate” where you will prepare a healthy meal or two for them; give them a massage (even an un-skilled massage can relieve stress); offer to take them for a drive in the woods where they can relax and just enjoy nature. If you have a boat, offer a boat ride to a remote area (in the summer) for a day of relaxation.

Anything you can do to help lessen their stress, will be a gift of health. This year, instead of participating in the gift-buying frenzy, think about the best gift you can give someone – THE GIFT OF HEALTH!
