From a dull ache to a sharp shooting pain that immobilizes us and drops us to our knees, back pain can be debilitating. Sometimes it’s acute (meaning a new condition) and sometimes it’s chronic (meaning it’s been there for a long time). But most of the time, back pain just simply sucks! The number of people with back pain increases every year. This is not ok with me. The number of surgeries performed, and medications prescribed makes it a chilling prospect indeed. But it doesn’t have to be.
I have been successfully treating back pain for over 20 years. I know each person’s presentation is unique, so I perform an analysis to better understand the root cause, or causes, of pain. Most cases involve multiple factors like degeneration, muscle spasms, swelling, and trauma. That is why I treat the person and not the disease.
But what causes back pain? So many things; a bulging disc, pinched nerves, stenosis, inflammation, degeneration, and the list goes on. What I know for sure is that our bodies don’t want to be in pain, and many painful mechanisms are part of the healing process (such as inflammation) and by treating the root cause we can help people get back on their feet and feel great again.
When I treat back pain, I place the acupuncture needles in local areas on the back and maybe some other points on the extremities. Inserting acupuncture needles into the local points on the back releases the muscles, tendons and ligaments that pull and compress vertebrae out of alignment. Think about it, bones don’t move on their own, it is the tension in the surrounding tissues that move the bones around in positions that create pain. When we release the tension, the vertebrae return to their normal positions and pain is relieved.
As the fine, hair-like needles enter the tissues, the body responds by initiating a local healing response in the area. This increases circulation, speeds healing and regeneration of the tissues and thereby also reduces pain.
Acupuncture also triggers the nervous system to release chemicals that are naturally pain-relieving. These opioid-like chemicals produced in the body are similar to those found in opioid pain relievers. Some are endorphins or anti-inflammatory agents.
Research shows that acupuncture can provide significant relief for both acute and chronic back pain. If the root causes are addressed, long-term benefits naturally occur.
In addition, the use of nutrition, nutritional supplements, and herbs support the healing process on a deeper level. The body needs the appropriate resources from our nutrition to heal the tissue. We guide you through that process as well.
