Chronic & Acute Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is a common issue that can stem from either an acute injury or a long-standing chronic condition. It often makes even basic movements – like reaching, lifting, or turning your head – painful and frustrating. For many people, shoulder discomfort can be so limiting that it disrupts daily life. Because of this, it’s one of the top reasons people seek out acupuncture treatments.

Acupuncture is well known for its ability to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, release muscle tension, and improve range of motion. These effects make it a powerful and effective treatment option for a wide range of shoulder conditions – from acute injuries like strains or sprains to chronic issues such as arthritis, tendinitis, or frozen shoulder.

The main shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint. It’s called this because the top of the upper arm bone – the humerus – is shaped like a ball. This ball fits into the shoulder blade, which acts as the socket. This unique structure gives your shoulder a wide range of movement. Supporting and stabilizing this joint are tendons, ligaments, bursa, and other connective tissues.

Most shoulder problems only affect a small area and tend to go away on their own with rest and time. But sometimes the problem lingers or worsens, turning into a chronic condition. A sports injury that never fully heals, repetitive motion strain, or frozen shoulder that gradually gets worse are just a few examples.

There are many possible causes of shoulder pain, which is why it’s important to understand what’s actually going on. Acute injuries – like a fall, strain, or sprain – are usually more obvious and easier to identify. But chronic shoulder issues often involve multiple factors and develop over time.

When the body doesn’t have the right building blocks – such as nutrients or adequate circulation – tissues can weaken,  and physical degeneration can occur. This makes the shoulder more prone to injury. A lack of movement or exercise can cause muscles and tendons to atrophy. Arthritis can develop when the body’s chemistry is out of balance, damaging cartilage and bone. Tension in the muscles between the neck and shoulder can cause shoulder pain. Inflammation in the bursa – the fluid-filled cushion that helps muscles and tendons glide smoothly – can also be a cause.

No matter what the cause of your shoulder pain is, acupuncture can really help. As you receive acupuncture treatments, you’ll likely notice that your shoulder feels better and your range of motion improves. That’s because acupuncture increases blood flow to the joint and stimulates the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body. It also reduces inflammation and helps relax tight muscles, which in turn supports better movement.

Interestingly, acupuncture has been shown in studies using MRI imaging to reduce calcific deposits in the shoulder. When specific acupuncture points are chosen based on the affected meridian, it can help dissolve those calcium buildups and improve both pain and mobility.

If you’re struggling with shoulder pain – whether it came on suddenly or developed over time – acupuncture offers a safe, natural, and effective solution to help you move more freely and comfortably again.
