"She was so encouraging and supportive. She knew how I was feeling and understood why I was feeling that way - it took away some of the guilt. When she says something - she knows it - it's no guesswork. She is very accurate because of her dedication to constant learning. I don't know any other practitioner who has the well rounded education in both conventional and alternative medicine that Dr. Carling has. With Dr. Carling's help I was able to take this big pool of symptoms, identify the source of each and resolve them. It was like peeling away the layers on an onion."
What Makes Vital Health Different
At Vital Health, we are different in that we looks for what is going on underneath the symptoms you are experiencing. A symptom is simply your body's way of telling you that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. It's like having the check engine light come on in your car. You can put a piece of tape over it and cover up the symptom (like taking a drug to mask a symptom) or you can cut the check engine light out of the car (like removing an organ that is not functioning properly), but until you find out WHY the check engine light is coming on in the first place, the problem still exists. We do a lot of investigating to discover WHY your body is not functioning properly in the first place. What is going on "underneath the hood?" Once we discovers WHY you are experiencing your symptom(s) in the first place, we are able to put together a comprehensive treatment plan to help you to re-claim optimal health.
"That's the cool thing about working with Dr. Carling, she teaches you how to work with your body instead of the quick-fix, "Band-Aid" approach of western medicine." - Stephanie
The other thing that makes Dr. Carling different is that she takes the time to truly listen to her patients and answers all of their questions. Her patients feel heard and know that she truly cares about them.
"I appreciate Dr. Carling's kindness. She has paid complete attention to me. She has so much compassion...she listens with her whole heart. She really cares what happens to me. You don't see that too often in medicine. She has wisdom and knowledge beyond measure. Dr. Carling is one of the most gracious women I have ever met." - Betty
"My experience with Dr. Carling has been wonderful. She is so helpful and so knowledgeable. I enjoyed being able to ask questions about my health and getting answers that work. I have felt cared for by the whole office. It really matters what I say - everybody is here to help me. I am so grateful that I came to see Dr. Carling." - Rosalia
A Letter from Dr. Carling:
I wanted to share with you why I am so excited about nutrition therapy, naturopathic medicine and acupuncture and how I came to this place in my life to offer the care that I do.
My mother said I wanted to be a doctor for as long as she remembered – she thought about age 3. All I talked about was “make you feel better”, wanting to make people well. I started studying medicine on my own at the age of 12 and working in a local hospital as a “candy striper” at age 14. By age 16, I had already completed a Nurses Aid course three times and was the assistant teacher for that course. I was hired as a Nurses Aid at 16 (when they weren’t supposed to hire until age 18) on a trial basis. I excelled and soon was educated and worked as a Practical Nurse.
By my early twenties I became disillusioned with traditional medicine. My basic premise that medicine “made people well” was quickly eroding. It wasn’t working. People were getting sicker! We’d see the same patients returning over and over again, in worse condition. During that same period, I married a Chiropractor and began learning that the body has the capacity to heal itself if we give it what it needs to heal with. I started studying again and in 1979 earned my Master Herbologist degree and received my Registered Nutritional Consultant degree shortly after. From that point on, I became a professional student, studying everything I could get my hands on and taking course after course related to health and healing. In 1989 I received my Doctorate in Oriental Medicine and in 1999 received my Doctorate in Naturopathy.
When I was young I suffered from digestive difficulties, severe headaches, candida issues, annual bouts of bronchitis, allergies and a congenital heart defect. When I finally sought the services of a wholistic health practitioner and nutritionist, I finally resolved the health issues that had plagued most of my childhood. That got me even more excited!
In 1982 my son was born with severe heart defects and was the first child (with his specific problems) ever to survive past 3 days old. I was determined to keep him alive and much of my learning was with that in mind. I was already in private practice with my husband at the time (a chiropractor), practicing nutrition and herbal medicine. My son has several heart defects which throw most cardiologists into a panic when they see him, yet we’ve managed his heart issues without medications his entire life. He is now 32, and still one of the only survivors. He lives a normal, healthy life and is currently traveling all over the world. He has been one of my greatest teachers.
My family history consists of many heart related diseases, both congenital and acquired – lots of strokes and heart attacks. We also have a great degree of thyroid issues and gross obesity in our family. Even though these are considered “inherited” conditions, and therefore assumed we have no choice, all of these are also preventable. Some of these I contend with personally, and as long as I apply nutritional principles and consistently take my supplements, I do well. The conditions I treat are based on my personal experience as well as educational and professional clinical experience. I too must go through similar health programs to keep my own health on track, so I understand where you come from and your struggles.
I lead a very active life, and am constantly on the go. In addition to my many business and church activities, I enjoy flying (I’m an IFR rated private pilot), jet skiing, riding ATVs, downhill skiing, gardening, beekeeping and international traveling. My husband and I love to dance regularly, and have even competed in a ballroom dance competition (and did well!). I started taking piano lessons at the age of 50, something I have wanted to do my entire life, and enjoy that immensely. In addition, my husband and I enjoy interacting with our 10 children (3 are mine and 7 are his) and 27 grandchildren. Many people have asked me over the years how I can possibly keep up with all of these activities, not to mention owning a business. They cannot conceive of having the energy to do even a fraction of what I do. The secret is leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle, eating a healthy diet, taking regular nutritional support and other preventative health care measures. Life is a joyous experience for me, and I want the same for you!
I have been a natural health practitioner for nearly four decades now, and it is still so exciting to actually help people get well. I have treated thousands of patients over the years, and it is so rewarding to look back and remember the difference I have been able to make in the lives of others. A few years ago, a patient of mine referred her father, an elderly man, to us because he had severe anemia (he should have had a blood transfusion, he was that severe). Upon inspecting his list of medications, we discovered that the drugs were actually making the problem worse. Later, when the man asked his doctor about it, the doctor admitted that he just figured the man was old and was going to die anyway, so it didn’t matter. I don’t think his daughter felt that way! We started him on acupuncture and nutritional therapy and he was eventually able to be weaned off of the drugs. The man is no longer suffering from anemia and is feeling better now than he has in years!
Then there was Natalie who was born with a condition called arthrogryposis. She was born in a folded up position. After three months of physical therapy she still could not unfold, she hadn’t moved her head, she couldn’t follow movement with her eyes and she hadn’t stopped crying from the day she was born. Within two weeks of starting acupuncture and nutritional therapy in my office, she had unfolded, she had begun reaching out with her hands, she had begun following movement with her eyes, and she had stopped crying.
Patti had been an insulin dependent diabetic for 14 years. By the time she sought out my services, her diabetes was out of control and was getting more and more serious. She was in big trouble. When I originally started treating her, I was expecting to stabilize her and stop the progression of her diabetes. I was amazed at how quickly she started recovering when she started acupuncture and nutritional therapy. She was eventually able to get off of her medications entirely, and was declared (by her medical doctor) completely free of diabetes. I followed up with her for several years, and she no longer exhibited any signs of diabetes.
Jennifer had been experiencing severe migraines every day of her life since childhood (she was in her late thirties when she came to my office). After her first acupuncture treatment, she didn’t experience a headache for an entire week. When I released her from care six months later, she hadn’t had a headache in 3 months.
These are just a few of the successes I have had over the years. I have helped countless people with conditions such as PMS, menopause, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, sinus problems, brain injuries, severe emotional disorders and many, many others. My success stories are countless and amazing! It brings me such incredible joy to be making such a difference in people’s lives, and giving their life back to them!
I am dedicated to helping you and future generations of your family achieve lifelong health, and part of that process is education. The health and lifestyle choices you make today will affect you for the rest of your life. They will also affect the health of future generations. By taking care of your body today, you are paving the way for healthy children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so on. In educating you, I am enabling you to make healthy choices and I am thus able to help millions of people for generations to come. That is why we offer a variety of educational classes and information every month in addition to what I teach my patients during their visits. I encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities.
My personal promise to you is to assist your healing the best way I know how, and as quickly as possible. I have absolute confidence in your body’s ability to heal itself and in my ability to assist you. If I feel I can’t help, I will do my best to refer you to someone that can. Open communication is vital and a critical component in our combined efforts in restoring your health.
I look forward to working with you to re-establish vital health in your life.
In Vital Health,
Holly A. Carling, O.M.D., L.Ac., Ph.D.
