As one of many costly health disorders in the US, GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease) and heartburn, are costing Americans billions of dollars every year! It’s time to put the fire out!
Unable to find any current fiscal impact studies, I relate the last – 2009 study: It is estimated at that time we were spending about $142 billion per year in the treatment of digestive disorders, GERD accounting for $15-$20 billion. That was an increase of 42% over the previous 10 years. Now we are 10 years past that study and GERD and related disorders are climbing even higher. The amount of money spent per year on this disorder is staggering!
It doesn’t have to be. There are many things that set the stage for heartburn or reflux to occur, that is completely within our control to fix. I understand that when your gut fires are raging, you don’t care what you spend, you just need to put the fire out! To do that, we need to be looking at several things – we have to be our own “arson” investigator.
